When the weather is cold, we close the windows and turn up the heat. This is bad news for our comfort and our health.

In winter, the temperature is maintained at a comfortable level by the home's Heating System. This, however is only part of the home comfort equation.

Indoor air quality (IAQ) is a term to define the characteristics of a comfortable and healthy home. For maximum health and comfort, three factors must be taken into account. They are temperature, humidity level, and the cleanliness of the air.

Humidity level is a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air and is usually stated as a percentage. This is normally expressed as relative humidity which is a comparison of the actual water vapor in the air to the total amount the air can hold. As a general rule, warmer air has a higher capacity to hold water vapor than colder air.

Relative Humidity is a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air (at a specific temperature) compared to the maximum amount of water vapor air could hold at that temperature, and is given as a percentage value. In colder months, the home's humidity level can drop because the colder air outside cannot hold as much moisture. As this air enters your home, it warms and expands leading to a lower relative humidity.

At humidity levels below 30%, eye, nose, and throat irritation can occur. Another indication of low humidity level may be the presence of static electricity. The remedy for low humidity levels is a device called a humidifier.

The recommended indoor relative humidity level is based on the outdoor air temperature. It is designed to provide the most comfort as well as to avoid condensation on the home's windows and other surfaces.

The humidifier Ottawa Honeywell IAQ thermostat integrates precision control of all your homes humidity, ventilation, and temperature as well as providing maintenance reminders to keep your system running at its peak.

Humidity control is also very important in the summer months. At levels above 50%, microbial growths such as mold is possible. Steam Humidifer OttawaDust Mites and other allergens are also increased at these levels. This can have an adverse impact on the health of family members due to the release of spores. The best way to avoid mold is to remove the moisture. A dehumidifier is required to do this in certain conditions, such as a basement, but in most cases, a properly designed air conditioning system should maintain proper humidity levels during warmer months. If High humidity is an issue in the winter months, ventilation is the best method of control.

Proper control of humidity levels can have a significant impact on overall energy use in your home. Ideal Humidity saves money and provides a healthier environment for you and your family.

The most common humidifier today is a flow through type. These humidifiers consist of a water supply, a cascading water pad, and a drain where any unevaporated water immediately drains away - No standing water, no mould growth.

Steam Humidifier OttawaSteam humidifiers take this a step further by actually injecting steam into your air stream. These are ideal for larger homes Over 2000 ft2) and heating systems like heat pumps where the air temperatures are relatively low, making natural evaporation difficult. There is also a significant reduction in water consumption, as all water that enters the humidifier is converted to humidity for your home.
